Background check FAQ

Common questions about the background check for chauffeurs in the US

Updated today

It's a requirement for chauffeurs across the US to perform a background check using Checkr.

The safety of chauffeurs and guests is paramount to Blacklane, our partners, and our corporate client base. For this reason, chauffeurs who do not pass a Checkr background check will not be able to perform rides with Blacklane.

  • Is the background check provider Checkr FCRA certified?
Yes, Checkr is FCRA certified. You can find a summary of your rights under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

  • I have questions for the background check company, how do I contact them?

You can contact Checkr by submitting a request, or by reaching out to the live support team via chat. They are available Monday to Friday, at the following times:

    • North America: 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Eastern Time (ET)

    • Outside the US: 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. Eastern European Time

Their chat box can also be found in the bottom right corner of your Checkr Dashboard and the Help Center.

  • Are all chauffeurs required to submit to a background check?
All chauffeurs in US states where this is a requirement must complete a Checkr background check.

  • I already have a background check with another company. Can I use this one instead?

Unfortunately not. This is because Blacklane has its own set of screening requirements in order to comply with the ordinances of business in the US.

  • What is the cost of the background check?
Depending on your city, you may have to pay a fee of $95 per chauffeur. This includes the motor vehicle record, drug screening, and criminal/county checks provided by Checkr. Payment for a submitted background check will be deducted on your next invoice, which will show the chauffeur’s name in the breakdown. A background check is considered submitted once a chauffeur has provided their information in full via the Checkr candidate portal.

  • How do I check the status of my background check?
Log into the Candidate Portal using the information you provided in your application. Once you’ve logged in, you can see the status of your report and if there are any further steps required.

  • I recently completed a background check with AmericanChecked. Why do I need to complete this again?
Due to new requirements which include drug screening, your background check must be performed with Checkr.

  • What are the background check requirements?
The elements included in the background check are listed below:

    • Criminal Report

    • Motor Vehicle Report (MVR)

    • A motor vehicle record (MVR) report is a person’s driving history reported by a government that issues driver's licenses. Governments might differ in the information they report, but MVR reports usually include the information below:

      • Full name

      • Current license status

      • Current license expiration date

      • Current license issue date

      • Current license first issued date

      • Restrictions

      • Endorsements

      • Suspensions

      • Violations

      • Accidents (doesn't report fault)

    • Drug Screening

      • Results for drug tests will be negative or non-negative.

      • Negative means the drug test returned clear.

      • Non-negative means the drug test returned positive results for one of the drugs on the panel.

  • What is a drug screening?

The drug screening is a non-THC 4-panel drug test, which tests for four types of prescription and illegal drugs, and is one of the most common kinds of drug screenings.

Drug screenings test for metabolites, which are byproducts that a person’s body produces when they use drugs. The screening detects whether metabolites from four types of drugs are present in a person’s system, including:

    • Amphetamines

    • Cocaine

    • Opiates

    • Phencyclidine (PCP)

  • What happens if my background check is not approved?
Safety is paramount, which is why chauffeurs who do not pass the background check will no longer be able to perform Blacklane rides.

  • Why do only partners in some US states need a background check?
Background check requirements vary from region to region. In North America, this is standard industry practice, and required due to national compliance regulations for businesses.

  • How long does it take for the results to come back?
Most reports take between 3-7 business days, depending on records. Drug screening results are typically available within 2 to 10 business days after completion.

  • Something on my background check report is wrong. What should I do?

If you think there is an error or inaccurate information in the results of your background check, you have the right to dispute those findings.

You can submit a dispute via the Candidate Portal. You may need to provide additional information or documentation depending on your situation.

  1. Log in to the Candidate Portal

  2. Locate the report containing inaccurate information

  3. Select "File a dispute" at the bottom of the page

  4. Choose the incorrect record(s) based on the options provided

  5. To assist with the investigation process, provide as much information and documentation as possible to support your claim that the record is inaccurate

  6. Submit the dispute.

  • What does submitting a dispute mean?

If your background check report contains information you believe to be inaccurate, you can file a dispute through the Checkr portal. Examples of disputes include:

    • A record reported doesn't belong to you

    • A record has incorrect details such as dates or charge type

    • A case status changed after the record was reported

Once your dispute is submitted, you will receive a confirmation email from Checkr. Once the reinvestigation is complete, Checkr will notify you by email of the results.

If the reinvestigation results in changes to your background check report, it will be updated, and both Blacklane and you will receive a copy of the updated report.

  • My report is showing as suspended, what does that mean?
Additional information may be needed to complete a report. You will receive a notification from Checkr with more details. Any additional verification can then be completed in the Candidate Portal.
