Everything you need to know about the chauffeur ID check

Blacklane has partnered with Onfido, a trusted digital identity solution, to enhance the security and efficiency of our chauffeur services. As part of this update, all chauffeurs should complete a quick and straightforward online identity check.

What is Onfido and why is Blacklane using it?

Onfido Limited (Onfido) provides remote identity verification technology that is designed to enable its clients to verify the identity of their users efficiently and securely. For example, Blacklane uses Onfido’s technology to confirm that chauffeurs registered with local limousine service providers are who they claim to be.

When a chauffeur begins the signup process, they are asked to provide a digital photo of their government-issued identity document (e.g., driver’s license) and a selfie, taken using a mobile phone or other device. Onfido analyzes these images to ensure the following:

  1. The identity document is genuine and has not been tampered with.

  2. The face in the selfie matches the face in the identity document.

  3. The selfie does not show signs of fraud, such as digital manipulation or facial spoofing attempts.

If the identity verification check is successful, the chauffeur’s identity is confirmed, and they can proceed with completing their onboarding process to join Blacklane’s platform as an active chauffeur.

How does it work?

You will receive an email from Blacklane asking you to complete an ID check. The email will contain a link which will take you to Onfido, where you can complete the verification.

You will need:

  • A mobile device with a camera

  • Your driver’s license

You will be asked to provide:

  • Your name and contact number registered with Blacklane

  • A copy of your driver's license

  • A picture of yourself (selfie) for comparison

Things to remember:

  • The link contains a time-sensitive token, so we encourage you to complete the process as soon as possible.

  • For security reasons, please avoid forwarding the email to anyone. The verification link is unique to you and should not be shared.

Why do I need to do this?

Updating how we perform ID checks is crucial for streamlining our document management procedures and ensuring compliance with the highest industry standards.

How long does the verification take?

Submitting your documents should only take a couple of minutes. The verification process takes just a few seconds once a copy of your driving license and selfie are uploaded.

What happens if my documents don’t match or there are discrepancies?

If there are discrepancies between the information you provide and your documents, don’t worry! These will be detected by Onfido, and our Partner Operations team will contact you if we need to clarify any details with you.

Who can I contact in case of technical difficulties?

If you have any issues whilst using Onfido, please contact their support team at support@onfido.com.

Will I need to verify my identity again in the future?

You will need to re-confirm your identity when your driving license expires. You will of course be notified about this in advance.

Is my personal information safe?

Yes, your information is highly secure. Onfido protects your data with advanced encryption protocols, including TLS 1.2+ for transmission and AWS-standard encryption for storage. Both Onfido and Blacklane strictly adhere to data protection laws like GDPR, ensuring your data is used only for verification purposes.

Can I complete the verification on my mobile device?

Yes, the verification process is mobile-friendly and is easy to complete using a device with a camera.

What should I do if I encounter issues during verification?

If you face any issues, please contact the Partner Support team for assistance. You can reach them on chat, by clicking ‘Talk to a person’.

What will happen if I don’t do the check?

We appreciate your help, and your timely response will contribute to the continued excellence of our services. Unfortunately, if your check is not done within the requested method, your account will be placed on hold until the verification process is complete. This would involve a longer, manual process.

Is my data used for training?

No, Blacklane has not allowed Onfido to use the data for training purposes.

Your Rights

Depending on where you live and subject to applicable privacy law, you may have the following rights in respect of the personal information we process about you as described in this Privacy Policy:

  • The right to request access to and disclosure of information that we hold.

  • The right to change and/or correct inaccurate information.

  • The right to block or suppress our processing of your information. This enables you to request that Onfido suspends the processing of your information in certain circumstances.

  • The right to object to our processing of your information

  • The right to request that we delete your information

  • The right to request portability of your information.

  • The right to withdraw your consent, if applicable. Withdrawing your consent will not affect the lawfulness of any processing we conducted prior to your withdrawal, nor will it affect processing of your information conducted in reliance on lawful processing grounds other than consent.

  • The right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority or regulator.
